I am obviously a liar!

I did not post anything the week after I wrote my last post.  I am a total liar!  My excuse is that life got in the way and I am a total scatterbrain.  I think I will stick with practicalpam.blogspot.com and just stop this blog.  It's too much for me to remember!

If you loved this blog - comment and let me know.  If you will just be depressed forever if I don't write here again, please, tell me.  I don't want people out there depressed because of me.  If you don't care, say nothing, I will get the hint! :)

Otherwise, please visit my main blog for more recent bloggings!  (I am not lying on that, I do write there wayyyy more often!!)

I am not being a good blogger

I have been ignoring this blog and some of the other ones I keep in favor of writing on my main blog - practicalpam.blogspot.com

I love to read and I have tons of reviews and new authors. I will be putting up links to some of those author's blogs and writing some more reviews next week. This week was a bit crazy, but to not write anything in a year, that is just inexcusable to me. I know that I am not the Queen and I don't need to keep stuff updated to please other's, but why on earth would I start something that I don't nurture and take care of? So next week, I will have a new post at least once a week!

New Author - Sarah Pekkanen

I've just found a new author - new to me anyway. Sarah Pekkanen has written The Opposite of Me and Skipping a Beat. I've read both of these books in the last months and the last one I just finished a few minutes ago. I have really enjoyed reading these books, they were thoughtful and I have to admit that they made me cry. These books are hard to describe - definitely not chick lit. They are based on "normal" people and what they go through in life. I read them very quickly which was too bad, I wish they would have lasted longer. But I can never put down a good book. I have to read it until I'm done and then I regret it - wishing I would have taken more time to get through it. That's always a sure sign of a good book.

Unfortunately, there are only 2 books by her so far, but here's to hoping that she will write many more. I highly recommend both of these books and I will wait ever so impatiently until she gets another one out.

The Middle - a tv sitcom review

I know I usually write about books, but today I will change the pace just a bit and take a look at TV. I don't watch a ton of TV, it is never on during the day, and I only have a few shows that I don't like to miss. How I met your mother is my all time favorite show that is on right now. I LOVE this show - the character Barney never fails to make me laugh.

This review is on the a new show called the Middle. This show stars Patricia Heaton, Neil Flynn, Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher, Chris Kattan, and Atticus Shaffer - who is the scene stealer as the son named Brick. The show is about a middle class family, the oldest son is always in trouble, the daughter Sue is a really weird kid who thinks she is good at everything and is really good at nothing. One episode, the punishment for the oldest son was that he had to be within 5 feet of his father at all times. It was hilarious. The last episode I watched, the daughter won a trip to New York, and the whole episode is about getting there. They lost Brick on the plane only to find him hidden, reading a book about menopause(menopause) that he took from a woman who was sleeping. This kid can't go anywhere without a book to read. I can relate! I should mention that when Brick likes something, he mumbles it into his chest after he has said it. That's the menopause joke.

Anyway, as far as TV goes, this show is something a bit different. It's not as popular as some of the other new shows, but I can't even name those shows because I just don't watch them. This show caught me off guard, I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. I might just find out what night it is on and plan to watch it, instead of just catching it sometimes!

Tonight is my favorite show however, How I met you Mother, on at 9pm. So don't call me because I won't answer!

So many books...

So little time. I did just read a Susan Lewis book that I enjoyed - but what it up with the over description? I had to skip through it a bit. I would read another book by her - it was a great story line and very well written.

I then took a little break and finished the Airhead series by Meg Cabot, the last book being Runaway. Yes, they are teen books, that's why I finished it in less than 24 hours. You just can't go wrong with Meg Cabot! She has a bunch of adult level books, teen level and even kid level. I've got my daughter reading a bunch of her books, she's into the Princess Diaries and the Allie Finkle series. I love her writing, it's funny, and very clever. They are just a breath of fresh air.

I just got a stack of books from the library that I need to get through before I even look at my book shelf. If I knew that my muscles wouldn't atrophy, I'd sit and read all day long. That is my idea of heaven. Ok, so reading, on a beach while tanning.....with a pina colada in one hand and someone to feed me grapes. I don't ask for much!

I must clarify

I was thinking about the past 2 reviews I have posted and I think I have to clarify something. What I consider a trash book is not trash. A trash book is a quick read that is usually mostly a romance novel, or chick lit. Now I know that I use trash in what seems like a bad way - but it isn't! Trash books are great, they are quick and easy, usually funny and I own at least 4-5 dozen of them. I have also read hundred's of them. They happen to be one of my favorite genres. They don't teach me anything or stimulate my brain at all, this is why I call them "trash". I have got to find a better word for them because I feel awful calling them that. I may use chick lit from now on.

It's not like are Harlequin romances or anything - not that there's anything wrong with those....I just don't happen to read them. I might be a bit delusional about my marriage if I read those! My breasts don't heave very often, and if I even mention a "throbbing manhood", I would laugh my ass off.

So that's it - I hope that is all sorted out.

Atonement by Ian McEwan A Review

I amnot having good luck with good books lately. Isn't there anything good out there to read that isn't trash?

Anyway, I read this book on a suggestion from another person. (I am going to go back to finding my own books, thanks.) The premise of the story is a good one - set in 1935, a girl witnesses a crime that change the course of her, and many other people's lives. The story has three parts, first the crime in 1935, second the effects that this crime has on a man that serves in the second world war, and the third part about the girl at 18. The story line was great, but the execution, in my opinion was poor. It was long and drwan out, a lot of detail without the need for it. The tone was set in the first few sentences, we don't need 6 more paragraphs about it!

I continued to read this book, again, because I thought it would have a great ending. It didn't. The main characters lives are summed up in one sentence. ONE sentence! He can go on and on about a house and the lawn, but gives one sentence to fill us in on what happens? Not my idea of a great ending. I have to admit that I skipped a lot of this book, not whole pages, but a lot of the long winded explanations. I did not like this book. I found the plot compelling, very interesting facts on the war, and the characters had the opportunity to be very in depth. But they didn't get the chance. I highly doubt that I will read another book by this author - maybe if he came up with the idea and let someone else write it.

I'm going to have to read ANOTHER trash book! Is it too much to ask for a good book that doesn't include murder, infidelity or sci fi? I'd like to learn something from a book, I'd like to immerse myself in a world that I am unaccustomed to. Will I ever find another thought provoking author? I guess I'll have to keep trying.
